Homeowner Workshop Series

Plaster Walls: June 8th, 9am -12pm, 1pm to 3pm

Learn about plaster walls, their history, construction and how they can be repaired. Techniques will be demonstrated. Sign up for the additional hands-on module for in-depth hands-on repair training after lunch.

Masonry: July 10th, 6-8pm

Learn best practices for the repair and maintenance of masonry (brick, stone, concrete) parts of a vintage home. Take away what a good mason will do and what must be avoided.

Windows: August 10th, 9am to 3pm

This all hands-on workshop will engage you while you take apart a historic windows, repair and glaze the sash, re-rope the weights and get experience improving a sash's energy efficiency..

Paint: September 11th, 6-8pm

Paint colors can enhance a vintage house or cause your neighbors to permanently shut their drapes. Learn about traditional paint color combinations, their placement and general rules of the trade for making your vintage house pop. Bring along a photo of your house for personal recommendations.

Wood Floors: October 12th 9- 12, 1-3

Bring back the beauty of your homes wood floors without destroying them. Learn about different types of wood floors, their repairing, stripping (chemically and manually) and other passive and mechanical methods to restore their finish. Morning lecture and demonstration. Afternoon hands on module.

HISTORY OF ~*~ RESTORE MICHIANA

 


The Restore Michiana Conference and Old House Fair, presented by the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County and Indiana Landmarks was developed to offer homeowners "Practical Preservation Solutions".  Unfortunately, there will be no Conference and Old House Fair this year...we are proudly offering the Restore Michiana Series instead!!!!

The following is a recap of the history of Restore Michiana:


May 20, 2006—First annual Restore Michiana located at Century Center

March 24, 2007—located at Madison Primary Center

March 8, 2008—located at St. Joseph High School


March 13, 2009—In-Service Day on The Economic Benefits of Historic Preservation & Heritage Tourism at St. Joseph County Public Library

March 14, 2009—scheduled at St. Joseph High School.  CANCELLED due to low registration

2010—Restore Michiana Series developed.  Events included: Energy Audit workshop by Ron Zmyslo of Indianapolis, EPA RRP Rule clarification by an EPA Region 5 representative, Vintage Green lecture by Todd Zeiger of Indiana Landmarks, WHY to Restore Wood Windows lecture by Richard Spigelmyer of Replacement Systems International.

2011—Events included: Preservation & Maintenance of Wood Windows workshop by Schoberg Restorations of Plymouth at a residence in New Carlisle, House Detectives presentation by Todd Zeiger of Indiana Landmarks at the Mishawaka Penn-Harris Public Library.

2012—Events included: House Detectives and House Styles by Todd Zeiger of Indiana Landmarks at the Mishawaka Penn-Harris Library, Hands-On Wood Siding Repair and Paint Workshop by Craig Barber at a residence in New Carlisle, Local Historic Districts of South Bend Heritage Tour premiere
